Philippe Malouin a réussi à créer un pont entre sa terre d’origine, le Canada, et sa terre d’adoption, l’Angleterre. Peut-être parce que ces deux pays offrent aujourd’hui les plus beaux témoignages du Brutalisme, entre le bâtiment Habitat 67 de Montréal construit par Moshe Safdir et la Trellick Tower construite à Londres par l’architecte Ernö Goldfinger.
On retrouve l’influence et les contours de ces bâtiments à travers les nouvelles pièces de Philippe Malouin, actuellement exposées à la NextLevel Galerie. Des pièces clairement en marge des tendances actuelles, comme des exercices de patience menés durant quelques mois avec une vingtaine de mains. « J’aime les choses difficiles, manuelles, cela donne une valeur aux objets. » Des pièces d’artisanat, entre micro-architectures se développant sous le principe de répétition et dentelles d’acier ultra-précieuse.

The images of near-deserted landscapes populated with a lone figure conjure up a movie sequence by Wim Wenders (...) At once a season behind and ahead of its time, this America of roads and buildings is a myth in itself, timeless in its very nature. only the image of Barack Obama on a wristwatch marks the epoch, the passing of time. But otherwise it might as well be 30 or 50 years ago. Following in the footsteps of Saul Leiter and Garry Winogrand in new York, William Eggleston in Biloxi, Mississippi and Lewis Baltz in California, Ronan Guillou draws on the photographic language of past masters, doing his own take of the same score, with a sense of serenity and distance. Doucement mais sûrement,la galerie a donné un coup de frais au design contemporain depuis son ouverture en mai 2009, tant à l'échelle des galeries parisiennes qu'à l'étranger, où nombre des pièces de ses désigners ont été acquises par les collections publiques et auréolées de distinctions au fil des évènements design. C'est le cas du designer Canadien Philippe Malouin qui signera l'exposition inaugurale du nouvel espace (...).

Réalisées en argentique, ces photos, oscillant entre recherche de neutralité et attention portée à la lumière naturelle, s'inscrivent dans la pure tradition du documentaire.

Those who hoped to see more quirky ideas from Philippe Malouin, like his belted chair or pneumatic table, will not be disappointed with his Gridlock floor lamp, a scaffolding-like tower of steel cross-braces. The prototype, renamed Ollie, became the centerpiece of an entire collection, dialoging with the Rad and Dar occasional tables, the Robin mobile, the Isa shelf and the Alice lamp—a marvelous Démonstration (the title of the exhibition) that left visitors eager to see more.

...Dal 18 di marzo presenti alla galleria parigina NextLevel la tua nuova collezione Gridlock. Lampade e arredi costituiti da una struttura metallica tridimensionale ripetuta all’infinito...?Il mio obiettivo era di realizzare qualcosa che sfuggisse al tema della decorazione, fin troppo presente nel design degli ultimi anni. Il paradosso è che questo tipo di struttura, anche se apparentemente tecnica, una volta ripetuta all’infinito può essere considerata ‘decorativa’.
Una sorta di interpretazione contemporanea del tema? ?In realtà lo sforzo è stato un altro: realizzare un progetto che potesse rappresentare al massimo la leggerezza della griglia di alluminio, fino a creare oggetti quasi invisibili. La dimensione decorativa è quindi solo una semplice conseguenza...

Pour faire le portrait de l'espace urbain, F.X. Combes part des lignes des immeubles, de leurs formes basiques. Afin d'obtenir une certaine distance avec la réalité, il ne retouche pas les images: il les photographie sur l'écran de son ordinateur. En photographiant plusieurs fois le même motif, il obtient des images quasi-similaires, mais dont l'éclairage ou le cadrage diffèrent imperceptiblement. Ensuite, il les réorganise, les structure, leur donne une nouvelle forme et une couleur. De ces nouvelles images naît une vision pure de la ville.

Pour l'exposition Materia chez NextLevel, celui-ci (Nicolas Le Moigne) propose des combinaisons surprenantes entre divers matériaux : contreplaqué bouleau, acier, aluminium, verre et velours s'entrechoquent avec subtilité. Les formes arrondies des plateaux contrastent avec la rugosité des piétements. Suivant le principe qu'il avait initié avec Verso Diverso (série à succès produit par Viceversa), les vases Flore magnifient leur contenant.
